"Untitled: Street Scene with Figures", unsigned, watercolour on paper circa 1940's, sight 29.2 x 44.5cm (11 1/2 x 17 1/2in); Provenance: acquired from the estate of the artist, from the same private Ontario collection as Lots 3204 and 3218 in Gardner Galleries' upcoming Fall 2025 Fine Art Auction; this work is believed to have been painted in New York City, and is a fine representation of her street scenes during this time period in her artistic career
Pegi Nicol MacLeod, Canadian, 1904-1949; after studying in Ottawa and Montreal in her early years, and working in Toronto from 1934-1937 Pegi Nicol McLeod married and eventually moved to New York City, whilst returning annually to Fredericton, New Brunswick; together with artist Lucy Jarvis, they started the Observatory Art Centre for aspiring artists at the University of New Brunswick; she continued to paint in New York throughout the 1940's, and in 1947 held her famous exhibition "The Manhattan Cycle" which consisted of 110 works focusing on her time in New York City, which toured across western Canada including Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Calgary, Edmonton, Victoria, and Vancouver
