Jackson and escorted the artist in his wheelchair through the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition and Ontario Place; this encounter with a high profile artist had a truly profound impact on him; Hergel studied on scholarship at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and took instruction from a number of notable contemporary Canadian artists in the 1970's including Jack Bush; at a chance meeting with A.J. Casson, he was given an impromptu sketching lesson and personal encouragement from the artist; James Hergel's paintings are represented in numerous private and institutional collections worldwide
