A rare original copper-plate engraving (Ref : Tome II, Pl. 4) from the 1744 French edition of John Hawkesworth account of Philip Carteret voyage in HMS Swallow accompanied by Samuel Wallis in HMS Dolphin; the ships visited the islands in 1767 and Capt. Wallis named the Cocos, Boscawen, and the Traitres, Keppel; the Dutch explorers Schouten and Le Maire originally named the islands on their expedition of 1615
Presented in good condition, with some professional repairs and light paper stains in lower left corner, protected in clear film sleeve - image size 19.7 x 32.4cm (7 3/4 x 12 3/4in)
