Titled "Hattie Cove at Dusk, Michipicoten River, Algoma", signed lower right, acrylic on board, 75.9cm (29 7/8in) square; Provenance: East Queen Gallery, Toronto; biography verso; James Edward Hergel, Canadian, born 1961; at the age of twelve, a young James Hergel met Group of Seven member A.Y. Jackson and escorted the artist in his wheelchair through the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition and Ontario Place, and this encounter with a high profile artist had a truly profound impact on him; Hergel studied on scholarship at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and took instruction from a number of notable contemporary Canadian artists in the 1970's including Jack Bush; at a chance meeting with A.J. Casson, he was given an impromptu sketching lesson and personal encouragement from the artist; James Hergel's paintings are represented in numerous private and institutional collections worldwide
