HERMINA (INA) MEARES

"Untitled: Abstract", signed lower left and verso, oil on canvas board, 50.8 x 61cm (20 x 24in); Provenance: this and the following lot are from the same Ontario collection; Hermina (Ina) Meares, Canadian, 1921-2000; the following reference is from "A Dictionary of Canadian Artists" by Colin S. Macdonald, Vol. 4, page 1173: Meares was born in England in 1921, and served with the WAAF and then studied painting in Spain. She moved to Canada in 1952, studying under JWG Macdonald, Paavo Airola and Carl Schaefer at the Doon School of Fine Arts, then continued studies with Macdonald at his Toronto studio. In 1962 she attended the Saskatchewan Summer School at Emma Lake. Her first solo show was held in Hamilton's Westlake Gallery in 1960 followed by shows throughout the early 60's in a number of Toronto galleries. Viewing her work in 1967, a critic for the Toronto Daily Star noted, "She's a stylish and accomplished colour-field artist...." and referring to a show at the Bonli he said, "She puts together a series of brilliant colours in such a way as to achieve an effect of profound serenity." Since 1955 she exhibited with Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour; Royal Canadian Academy; Canadian Women Artists at the CNE; the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts Spring Shows; Winnipeg Biennial (hon. mention, 1962) and travelling exhibition of Western Canada Circuit (1965): and the Painters of Quebec group in New York City (1965). She lived in Picton, Ontario before her death in 2000
