Alexander Young (A.Y.) Jackson, Canadian, 1882-1974, best known as a founding member of the Group of Seven; Jackson was a War Artist during WWI, Group of Seven member from 1920 to 1933 and later the Canadian Group of Painters from 1933-1967; he also taught at the Banff School of Fine Arts from 1943-1949; Jackson travelled to Port Radium on Great Bear Lake in the Northwest Territories in 1950, and spent five days camping in the Teshierpi Mountains in August of that year; planning to meet up with Maurice Hall Haycock (Canadian, 1900-1988), Jackson wrote in his autobiography "Haycock had work to do at Port Radium, so I timed myself to get there when his work was completed. I had always wanted to get into the Barren Lands, and Mr. Bennett had promised he would get me there. There were three of us in the party, Haycock, myself and Bob Jenkins, a permanent employee, who came along to hunt and explore." Jackson humorously reported in his diary entry dated August 23rd, 1950 "We have been painting boulders. There are millions of them, all shapes and sizes. It gives one a great deal of work."

This is a rare subject matter and important work from A.Y. Jackson's August, 1950 travels, which showcases his unique painting technique with rolling hills over the rocky landscape; a splendid work with multi-colours including reds and oranges, brown, beige and black tones throughout; "Teshierpi Mountains, Barren Lands" has only been in two private collections previously, and has never before been offered for sale by public auction
