A large-scale oil on canvas depicting a room interior with a seated young woman wearing elegant attire, signed lower left and inscribed "Paris", 81.3 x 66cm (32 x 26in); canvas stamped verso; displayed in a vintage custom frame by Emmett Maddix of Toronto; John Wentworth Russell, a prominent Canadian artist known for his portrait and landscape paintings, 1879-1959; born in Binbrook, Ontario, Russell studied at the Hamilton Art School and Art Students League, New York, before coming to Paris in the early 1900's; he eventually settled in Toronto and later opened his own studio and the Russell School of Fine Art; Russell's works are housed in many prominent collections across the country including the National Gallery of Canada, the Art Gallery of Ontario and the Art Gallery of Hamilton; this is a major work by the artist and one of the largest known works in existence
