Titled "Sawyer-Stoll Mill, Massanoga", signed and dated verso, oil on artist board, 38.1 x 45.7cm (15 x 18in); Provenance: from the collection of Mr. Bruce Best of Montreal, who acquired this painting directly from the artist; Note: the Sawyer-Stoll Mill was located north of Mazinaw Lake, Ontario which is now in the area of Bon Echo Provincial Park; this work was said to date to the 1930's and shows a strong influence of P. C. Sheppard; Orval Clinton Madden, Canadian, 1845-1917; the artist studied at the Ontario College of Arts under P. C. Sheppard, J. W. Beatty, J.E.H. MacDonald, W. Cruikshank and G. A. Reid; he worked as a commercial artist and was a member Graphics Arts Club, exhibited with the Royal Canadian Academy from 1932 to 1941, and the Art Association of Montreal from 1933 to 1939
