Titled "The Lookout Rock, Algoma", signed lower left, acrylic on artist board, 63.8 x 78.7cm (25 1/8 x 31in); Provenance: East Queen Gallery, Toronto, original price $6500.00; artist's stamp verso; James Edward Hergel, Canadian, born 1961; at the age of twelve, Hergel met Group of Seven member A.Y. Jackson and escorted him in his wheelchair through the grounds of the Canadian National Exhibition and Ontario Place; this encounter with a high profile artist had a truly profound impact on him; he later studied on scholarship at the Art Gallery of Ontario, and took instruction from a number of notable contemporary Canadian artists in the 1970's including Jack Bush; at a chance meeting with A.J. Casson, he was given an impromptu sketching lesson and personal encouragement from the artist; James Hergel's paintings are represented in numerous private and institutional collections worldwide; this is a large scale work by the artist, which showcases his unique painting style and vibrant colours of the northern Ontario landscape
