LOT DETAILS

Titled "Flower Market, Bergen, Norway", signed lower right, oil on board circa 1955, 61 x 76.2cm (24 x 30in); Provenance: private collection, London; Edith Grace Lawson Coombs, Canadian, 1890-1986, born in Hamilton, Ontario, eventually moving to St. Catherines and studied at the Ontario College of Art from 1913-1918; an educator most of her life, Coombs taught at Edgehill College in Nova Scotia, Havergal College in Toronto and the Ontario College of Art from 1921-1956

Prior to WWII, Coombs painted with a very dark palette and her paint was much thicker/heavier; after the War, she travelled to Europe and is amazed by light and colour; from then on her palette is much lighter, more colourful and her brushstrokes are very loose/unrestrained, much like the great French Impressionists of the late 19th century
