LOT DETAILS
A rare original copper-plate engraving (Ref; Tome XI No. 7) from Admiral George Anson’s 1740 Voyage around the world, and published in Paris, France c.1757
Anson reached Juan Fernandez on 9 June 1741, an island originally discovered by chance on 22 November 1574 by Spanish sailor, Juan Fernandez after deviating from his planned course between Peru and Valparaiso; Note: of interest is the fact that Alexander Selkirk, (1676-1721), a Scottish privateer and later (1717) Royal Navy officer, was marooned there 1704-1709, inspiring Daniel Defoe’s Robinson Crusoe
