Finely crafted steel plate engraving of "Charles Wilkes, Commander, U.S.N.", published in 1845 by G.P. Putnam and Co., New York; this portrait of Commander Wilkes from a painting by Thomas Sully 1783-1872 (now in National Portrait Gallery, Smithsonian), was used to illustrate the narrative of the first United States Exploring Expedition into the Pacific in 1841; the engraver was R.W. Dodson
