This finely crafted and beautifully coloured steel plate engraving was published in 1845 by G.P. Putnam & Co., New York; this view of the crater was taken from field studies by the United States Exploring Expedition in 1841; it was published in the "NARRATIVE OF THE UNITED STATES EXPLORING EXPEDITION TO COMMEMORATE THE FIRST OFFICIAL AMERICAN VISITATION TO THE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS" by Commander Charles Wilkes, USN
The drawing is by Captain Wilkes himself and the engraving by Sherman and Smith of New York; image size 13.3 x 19.7cm (5 1/4 x 7 3/4in), frame outside dimensions 39.4 x 45.1cm (15 1/2 x 17 3/4in); very fine condition and nicely presented with multi-matting in Koa wood frame.
