An original late 18th century 38.1 x 33cm (15 x 13in) ebony, brass and bone octant/reflecting quadrant, with nameplate indicating this was once owned by Capt. John Holdsworth (Digby, UK, 1761-1813), probably a gift when he became a Loyalist Captain of the merchant ships at age 30, travelling extensively to New York and Nova Scotia, according to family records
The quadrant is intact and functional with three interchangeable coloured filters, double peep (fore and aft), mirrors spidered but intact, numbered arc circle and vernier, streaky/spotty original lacquer, bun feet, no case; also included is an antique engraving print of a quadrant (unframed)
