Ink wash on paper "Duchess of Argyll", titled, signed with monogram, 17.8 x 10.8cm (7 x 4 1/4in) - John Linnell, British, 1792-1882 - this is the first of several works by Linnell that have been removed from frames and re-matted for storage (since 1951); Linnell was born in London and admitted to the Royal Academy Schools in 1805 at the age of thirteen; Linnell became known for portraiture, landscapes, engraving and as a patron of William Blake - his works are in most major collections including The Tate and The Met.
