LOT DETAILS

English earthenware phrenology head circa 1829-1850 with different sections of the brain marked in black, indicating measurements of bumps on the skull to predict mental traits; this example designed by phrenologist F. Bridges, and also with pen/quill holders on base - height 14cm (5 1/2in), width 7.6cm (3in); some paint losses and minor chips commensurate with age; Note: this is an extremely rare original example from the 19th century, which are reproduced as decorative items today; a similar phrenology head is on display at Sir Henry Wellcome's Museum Collection, London, England
