The collection of Robert Gibbons Foster (Canadian, 1888-1948), H.A.S. (Hamilton Art School), A.S.L.N.Y. (Art Students League of New York), C.S.G.A (Canadian Society of Graphic Arts) and associate member of the Art Club of Hamilton featuring original drawings, oil paintings, watercolours and photographs by or associated with the artist in the areas of Hamilton, Ontario and New York City; Gibbons Foster was born May 11th, 1888 in Wentworth, Ontario, studied at the Hamilton Art School (1906-1909) with Albert H. Robinson, winning numerous prizes and scholarships including the top prize from the Art Students League of New York. He also studied with well known American artist William Merritt Chase from 1909-1910, a portrait sketch and oil painting in this auction attributed to be portraits of Chase; Gibbons Foster was an illustrator for The Hamilton Spectator (circa 1907-1908) and exhibited his works from 1927 to 1945 at the Art Gallery of Toronto, Art Club of Hamilton and others (full exhibition list available). From 1919 to 1946 he owned a shoe store called "Foster Shoes" and in 1940 moved into the former house of his father-in-law on Fairleigh Street in Hamilton, the same house where this collection was found. Robert Gibbons Foster passed away at General Hospital, Hamilton in 1948 at the age of 60. Several works are presently in the Art Gallery of Hamilton and a linoleum print titled "Aspidistra", which was exhibited at the 1939 World's Fair in New York, is in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Canada. This is the first time in over 70 years these original works have been available to the public.
Scenes and subjects have been expertly identified by a Toronto area art historian. Most works from this auction were found in the artist's folio unframed and offered "as is" - auctioneers suggest prospective bidders take advantage of viewing times to satisfy themselves with size and condition. Every lot has a starting bid of $10.00 and is offered without reserve.
