LOT DETAILS

Titled verso "Loch Leven and the Pap of Glencoe", signed lower left, dated verso "About 1958" and also signed by McDougall and dated 7/(19)76, oil on masonite, 15.2 x 20.3cm (6 x 8in); frame outer dimensions 35.6 x 47cm (14 x 18 1/2in); Provenance: from a doctor's private collection, London; Clark McDougall, Canadian, 1921-1980; a prominent 20th century St. Thomas, Ontario artist, McDougall travelled to Quebec in 1950 which had a major impact on his artwork; by the early 1950's, he was working as a fauve painter which can clearly be seen in this lovely work, with bold colours, especially in the pink rhododendron flowers in the foreground; this painting is an excellent example of the middle intermediate of his career, well after his earlier realism studies, but prior to his famous black enamels; works by Clark McDougall rarely appear for sale by auction as most are now in the hands of private collectors, as well major collections including the Art Gallery of Ontario, Museum London and the Canada Council Art Bank
